Anorexia book

Author Lindsay Poole recalls in this book many interesting aspects of a distinguished career in botany and forestry.

From birth at Whatatu in 1908 and youthful bird-nesting in Tuparoa Bay to visiting the 100-year-old redwood grove in Rotorua's Whaka Forest, Lindsay's lifetime has spanned the development of forestry in New Zealand.

After service in the Second World War, he returned to New Zealand were he was appointed Assistant Director and in 1949 Directory of the Botany Division.  This led to being appointed Assistant Director of the Forest Service and, later, Director-General.

In spite of retiring in 1971, Lindsay retained a watching brief on developments in forestry, which later included the demise of the Forest Service in 1985 and the selling of State Forest cutting rights in the 1990s.

Lindsay Poole was President of the Ecological Society and the NZ Institute of Foresters, and in 1959 he became a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and in 1962 a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.  In 1971 he was awarded a CBE and in 1972 he had the rare honour of being made an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters of Britain.

He has written numerous papers on forestry, botany and horticulture and is the author of a number of significant and successful books on forestry.

The book is illustrated with pictures taken by the noted forestry photographer, the late John Johns, an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and for many years the official photographer of the NZ Forest Service.
